CHAPTER 19
Izzy dashed across the yard, crouching low, looking all around for the active shooter. When he got to the A-frame house, he flattened himself against it, just as the rain began to pour. âPolice!â he shouted amidst the sudden downpour. âPut down your weapon and identify yourself!â
No response.
The rain was really pelting. Izzy waited for a moment to see if it would lighten up. Thankfully, the A-frame provided an overhang of about twelve inches along the front of the house. As the rain continued to pour, Izzy slid along the cedar planks, checking inside windows.
He tried calling out again, âPolice! Whoâs back there?â He thought for a second he heard something like giggling but couldnât be sure with the sound of the wind and rain. âPut down your weapon, or you may get shot,â Izzy ordered. He was unarmed, of course, but there was no reason that whoever was back there should know that.
The rain started to slowâone of those quick summer hitters. Izzy waited another minute, listening and not hearing anything before making a crouched run around the side of the house, past some old croquet mallets leaned against the slanted roof and an empty mesh rabbit pen.
Izzy froze at the corner and hazarded a quick peek into the backyard.
There was Mary Beth.
She was seated with her back to a picnic table that was littered with crumpled beer cans. The sheriff was holding her Glock to her nose like she was smelling the barrel. She was in her underwear, a pretty pink pair of cotton panties, with her long pale legs spread in a wide stance. Her curly hair was haphazardly tied into a top knot. The rain had slowed to a drizzle but sheâd obviously been outside during the deluge as her drenched white tank top clung to her braless chest.
âPssst. MB.â
Mary Beth didnât respond. She looked like she was meditating, completely unphased by the elements, but swaying slightly, eyes closed, blowing softly on her pistol.
Izzy tried again, louder this time. âPssst!â
Mary Beth opened her eyes slowly. She looked at him blankly at first then held her finger to her lips. âShhhh.â
Izzy didnât know what was going on. Why were they being quiet? Who else was out there? Was Mary Beth the one whoâd been doing the shooting? Or was it someone else? Was she in danger?
Before Izzy could ask any of those questions a twenty-something man who was dingus-dangling naked, jumped out from behind an elderberry bush, crouched down like he was about to take a dump, yelled âPull!â then leap-frogged into the air flinging two full beer cans high into the sky.
Mary Beth sprang into action, swiveling around in a one-eighty, losing her balance in the process and falling hard on her hip in the muddy grass but never taking her eyes off the cans. She had her arms extended with a two-handed grip, leaning sideways, and squeezed the trigger twice, blowing both Budweisers into a firework explosion of suds.
âWhooooo!â the naked man hooted. He
